One of them has a solution to the problem. In ‘The Collectables’, three friends, who are working on their theses, consider men to be a disappointment. Women take centre stage in this collection, being often the main characters. When the story comes to an end, much is left to the imagination, which doesn’t diminish its impact. What seems like a tale about an ordinary teenage girl with a skin condition turns into something much different, more unsettling. ‘Mantis’, the first story in the collection, sets the mood for what is to come. Several of the stories are metaphors that explore the characters’ feelings, tribulations and distress without resorting to sentimentality. Those features are used to highlight various human experiences. The majority of the short stories in the collection Salt Slow by Julia Armfield have the appearance of being true-to-life, but as we keep on reading, mystical and supernatural elements take over.

I did not expect the way it ended at all, but yet deep down, I knew it was going to happen. They story of Maria Owens felt familiar, yet new. Either way, I was sad to turn the last page. Maybe because Practical Magic was apart of my childhood, or maybe because it was written in such a way that couldn’t help but make your emotions intertwined with the story. Magic Lessons is a celebration of life and love and a showcase of Alice Hoffman’s masterful storytelling.ĭo you ever read a new book, and instantly it feels like home? And it’s here that she learns the rules of magic and the lesson that she will carry with her for the rest of her life. Here she invokes the curse that will haunt her family. When Maria is abandoned by the man who has declared his love for her, she follows him to Salem, Massachusetts. It is here that she learns her first important lesson: Always love someone who will love you back. Under the care of Hannah Owens, Maria learns about the “Nameless Arts.” Hannah recognizes that Maria has a gift and she teaches the girl all she knows. Where does the story of the Owens bloodline begin? With Maria Owens, in the 1600s, when she’s abandoned in a snowy field in rural England as a baby. In an unforgettable novel that traces a centuries-old curse to its source, beloved author Alice Hoffman unveils the story of Maria Owens, accused of witchcraft in Salem, and matriarch of a line of the amazing Owens women and men featured in Practical Magic and The Rules of Magic. Hayward takes on the case because of his past love affair with Haviland, but he quickly learns that he signed up for more than he bargained for when it becomes obvious that every member of the sprawling Leonides family is a suspect in the patriarch’s death. The plot hews quite closely to the source material: Private detective Charles Hayward ( Max Irons, utterly devoid of charm or personality) has been hired by Sophia de Haviland ( Stefanie Martini) to solve the possible murder of her tycoon grandfather. Thus, “Crooked House” feels as lifeless as the corpse at its center. It’s a bland exercise in mystery that ostensibly highlights the performances from its randomly assembled cast ( Glenn Close! Gillian Anderson! Christina Hendricks! Terrence Stamp?), but the actors never once seem engaged with the material beyond the surface. Unfortunately, director Gilles Paquet-Brenner never bothers to inject a spark of life into his merely competent adaptation, let alone other necessary qualities like suspense or entertainment. Yet, there’s another adaptation of a Christie novel that has snuck in under the wire before the end of the year: “Crooked House,” a drawing room mystery set in an enormous estate owned by a brutish, recently deceased patriarch. Which gives you some insight into why he turned out the way he is. Plot 2/2 points: This is a crazy story, you’re in the head of a psychopath and you see his entire world, including his messed up mom. And I definitely will be reading the rest of the series because I need more. The second half of this book was amazing though. The first chapter is the bloody massacre with the Mercedes but then it’s all world building which was a little boring. Hook 1/2 points: It took me about 150 pages to get into this book. Also King puts you right in the mind of a serial killer and it’s creepy and uncomfortable. By the end of the book, you really know these characters. The best part about the writing in this book though is the character depth. But once the thrills start to heat up, this book was not put down. Writing 2/2 points: As usual I found King’s world building skills impressive, although maybe too extensive. It’s a race against time, Hodges must figure out who Brady is before he can pull off another massacre. This story follows retired cop Bill Hodges who starts working on the case of the Mercedes Killer again because he gets a message from him. Brady Hartsfield enjoyed the rush of murder and has decided he will do it again but bigger. A man driving a huge Mercedes into a crowd of people killing almost 10 and seriously wounding a lot of others.
